Clogged toilet, shower or tub in Folsom
Most bathroom clogs are hair, soap or paper close to the fixture. The question that matters is whether it’s one fixture, or the whole bathroom and beyond.

Call to check when a local plumber can come out.
Which fixture, which fix
Start with the fixture that’s acting up, then check whether anything else in the house is affected.
| Fixture | Usual cause | Worth trying first | Call when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toilet | Too much paper, wipes, or an object (toys and phones are common) | A flanged plunger, steady pushes. Stop flushing. | It clogs again within days, or other drains gurgle when you plunge |
| Shower | Hair bound up with soap scum just below the strainer | Remove the strainer and pull the hair out with a plastic drain tool | It fills when a toilet is flushed: that’s the main line |
| Tub | Hair caught on the stopper linkage | Remove and clean the stopper | Slow after cleaning, or it gurgles with other fixtures |
| Bathroom sink | Hair, toothpaste and soap on the pop-up stopper | Pull and clean the pop-up stopper | Water stands with the stopper out and the trap clear |
When it’s not just the bathroom
A bathroom is often where a main line problem shows up first, because the shower or tub is the lowest drain. These are the signs the clog is further down:
- The shower or tub fills with water when a toilet is flushed or the washer drains.
- Two bathrooms are slow at once.
- Plunging the toilet makes the tub gurgle, or the reverse.
- The water coming up is dirty or smells of sewage.
If any of these fit, stop using water and read main sewer line clogs, or what to do about a sewer backup if sewage is already coming up.
What a plumber does
For a single fixture, a plumber uses a small hand cable through the drain, or a closet auger for a toilet. The auger is shaped to get through the toilet’s trap without scratching the bowl. Sometimes the toilet has to come off the floor so the line can be cleared from the flange.
If more than one fixture is involved, they’ll go to the cleanout and clear the main instead. A clog that keeps coming back is a reason to ask for a camera inspection.
Bathroom drain questions
The toilet is about to overflow. What do I do?
Don’t flush again. Lift the tank lid and push the flapper at the bottom of the tank closed, or turn the shutoff valve behind the toilet clockwise. Then plunge with a flanged plunger, using steady pushes rather than hard jabs.
Why does my tub gurgle when I plunge the toilet?
The toilet and tub share a drain line further down. If plunging one disturbs the other, the clog is likely past the point where they join, possibly in the main line. Stop plunging and read main sewer line clogs.
Are “flushable” wipes really flushable?
They pass through the toilet, but they don’t break down like toilet paper. They catch on roots and rough joints further down and build into a mat. Folsom’s sewer code lists debris and rags among prohibited discharges. Put wipes in the trash.
